The best performance of an Avilanian chess player so far in this century, has just been staged by FIDE Master Roberto Carlos Sánchez Álvarez (2410), occupying the third position in the Open Group 1 of the Jose Raúl Capablanca in Memoriam International Tournament.
Robert closed the competition, together with 114 participants, winning seven points of 10 possible, sufficient for his second International Master norm (He attained the first one at the national tounament held earlier this year in the province of Ciego de Ávila).
Only two FMs with Grandmaster norms, Carlos Hevia (Havana, 2542) and Ermes Espinosa (Villa Clara-2441), occupants of the first and second position, respectively, and bearing 7.5 units each, were able to surpase the score of the Avilanian representative.
Shortly after his return home, Sanchez said that this result reflects his preparation in the previous months, and that its next official competition will be the Tomas Jiménez in memoriam, set for June 15 in Ciego de Ávila city.
Referring to his games, he said he finished unbeaten with six even, before GM Juan Borges (Guantanamo-2467) and Lelys Martínez (Santiago de Cuba- 2468), MI Mariano Ortega (Camagüey, 2467) and MI Luis Agüero (Havana, 2432), and also drew level with his counterparts Rolando Alarcón (Havana, 2417) and Juan Carlos Obregón (2479) from Las Tunas.
His victories were four, before two IM, Plinio Pasos (2248) from Ecuador and Humberto Blanco (2425) from Las Tunas, in addition to FM Julio Javier Alonso (Matanzas, 2306) and the National Youth Leandro War (Granma- 2372).
At first glance it shows that his ties took place before rivals of higher Elo, while he beat three opponents of less coefficient and another one surpassing him, so his performance rating was 2 557, the highest achieved in his career. His official figure of 2410 should increased by 20 points on the July list.
As for the possibility of attaining the IM title, Sánchez Álvarez needs to make another official norm in eight official games. This weekend he is invited to the tournament in fast games, which will take place in the Jardines del Rey tourist destination, after the last semifinal matches between Leinier Domínguez and Isán Ortiz, and Lázaro Bruzón-Yuniesky Quesada, all for the national title.
Other Avilanians participated in the Capablanca Tournament. FM Rodney Hernández finished in the 73 position of the Open Group1 and attained five points, while Keilyn Becerra, in the Open Group 2 ended in the 97 position, with 4.5 points among 132 contestants.
