 The Avilanan basketball team known as the Buffaloes is proud to have Joan Luis Haití in its ranks. The otstanding player, who was the pillar of success in the last Superior Basketball League (SBL), was recently voted the best athlete of the province in the past month. The election took place during the habitual meeting of the the Avilanian Sport Journalists Club.
The exceptional player, who led the recovery of the crown in the SBL, the sixth in seven tries, overcame the opposition of Niriam Sinal, Vladimir García and Fernando Gómez.
Niriam, overall winner and the best in the three contests of the national beach voli circuit, besides attaining most of the individual leaderships, unbeaten in the National Series during the 31 days of March; and Gómez, member of the Honor Roll and leading scorer in the National Hockey League, were the other two athletes who deserved recognition.
In the category of Best Young Athlete, the winner was Daisel Quesada, who, among the inexperienced of beach voli, was the most outstanding in the National Circuit, in which contest he played with Yasel Dario Gonzalez. This duo won every game (18) and hardly lost two sets.
Among the disabled athletes, stood Yoandi Gonzalez, the Cuban javelin monarch.
