The possibility that the Cuban fans enjoy new duels between the Grand Masters Leinier Domínguez and Lázaro Bruzon is among the attractions of the Cuban chess championship, men's branch, to be held again in Ciego de Ávila from January 27 to February 11.
According to the information published this week by the Capablanca website, Carlos Rivero, the national commissioner, said that this year, just like last, there will be 20 competitors, but there are still details to be defined, such as the competition system, which can involve new variants facilitating the participation of the two champions.
Both Bruzón and Leinier lighted up the Jardines del Rey tournament held last September, and in their in a dialogue with the press they showed their interest in resuming the struggle for the crown of national chess, although they suggested alternatives not causing considerable losses to their respective coefficients.
Classifications in the zonal tournaments are taking place all over the country these days. The finalists will join the eight members of the national pre-selection.
Unlike previous years, in 2012 an Avilanian, FIDE Master Roberto Carlos Sánchez, might be involved in the tournament, which responds to a request made by the provincial executives to the national authority for a local player to have that possibility of development.
This athlete, local champion in 2010, is part of the team of Cuban sports collaborators in El Salvador, but said he will make coincide his vacations with the prestigious tournament.
Ciego de Avila had two other opportunities to include participants in the national competition by includingRodney Hernández and Carlos Manuel Castellanos in the zonal final competition of central Cuba, but both had poor performances.
