taller-antibioticosAppropriate use of antimicrobials in the treatment of infectious diseases, as an essential basis for the recovery of patients admitted for various health conditions, was the main topic analyzed by professionals in the central Cuban province of Ciego de Ávila, during the Morón 2012 First National Workshop of the Alliance for the Prudent Use of Antibiotics (APUA).

The declining production of antibiotics in the pharmaceutical industry in recent years, coupled with the growing bacterial resistance to these drugs by inadequate additional requirements, have caused a significant increase in infectious diseases that have become leading causes of death in the current world's population (16 out of the 53 million annual deaths).

"This is why we are developing a national strategy in each country's hospital has a committee of antibiotics formed by a group of experts (microbiologists, epidemiologists, pharmacists, infectious disease, etc.), to ensure the correct use of medicines in all specialties, according to the diagnosis of the patient", said Dr. Moisés Morejón García, president of APUA-Cuba.

"The most frequent diseases in Cubans are respiratory, urinary and digestive, of which a high percentage are viral and do not need antibiotics, for which reason we provide guidance to physicians and the public, so they may identify problems in each area and establish a protocol for joint action at national level ", he added.

The doctors referred also to hygiene (hand washing), scientific exchange, updated information, discipline, control and responsibility of hospital physicians in consulting services, wards and Emergency as fundamental elements to address the current infection phenomenon.

The meeting led to the creation of the APUA Provincial Chapter that will, among other things, promote the rational and appropriate use of antimicrobial agents to reduce bacterial resistance to several compounds, one of the biggest problems of infectious diseases of this century.

The Alliance for the Prudent Use of Antibiotics was founded in 1981 and brings together members from over 100 countries with close relations with scientific institutions dedicated to the preservation of health, as the Center for Control and Prevention of Communicable Diseases of U.S., the Pan American Health Organization, the U. S. Food and Drug Administration, and the World Health Organization, among others.
