catedraSocial improvement of the elderly's image is among the achievements of the University Department of the Elderly (UDE) in Ciego de Ávila, a territory that has achieved the involvement of more than 2 000 senior people in a teaching project.

The upgrading strategy, implemented a little over a decade, comprises an introduction and subjects such as human development, healthy prevention, social security, cultural development and efficient organization of free time.

During the school year, the students, grouped in the 10 branches of the province, also acquire knowledge related to the changes that take care with aging, the causes for memory loss, as well as the role of family in these processes.

Students also develop healthy lifestyles, and are enabled to recognize any biological, psychological or social changes that occur in this stage of life.

Noelia Basalto Montejo, chair of the Provincial Consulting Group in charge of the UDEs in the main municipality, expressed that any senior person may have access to these studies, regardless of their cultural level, however, there is still a high percentage of them who reject the possibility of joining the project.

She said the University of the Elderly aims for the preparation of the elders for a better quality of life, and for them to continue carrying out several activities within society.
