The mountainous municipality of Florencia, located northeast of the province of Ciego de Ávila, has the largest aging population of this central Cuban province, and third in the country, with a rate of 21 percent, a situation that requires several actions to ensure care for the elderly.
Within the priorities of the Public Health System, an old people's home was recently inaugurated in Florencia town. The institution offers several care services, among them, nursery, physiotherapy and rehabilitation, and occupational therapy, besides the work of a physician, a social worker, a dietitian and several cultural activists.
With a capacity of 32 beds, this home operates in close relationship with the Grandparents Home also in town, the common objective is to care for the elderly living without the support of another person, preferably those who cannot fend for themselves, and those who stay alone during the daytime.
Ciego de Ávila has eight of such institutions, out of which the ones located in the municipalities of Primero de Enero and Ciro Redondo underwent a major repair. Local authorities are planning the construction of two more similar institutions in the municipalities of Majagua and Baraguá.
In 2011, the care received by elderly people allowed the attainment of a significant reduction of the mortality rate in this sector of the population.
