hotel-trypThe Tryp Club Cayo Coco and Meliá Cayo Coco hotels, in the Jardines del Rey (king's gardens) tourist destination of the central Cuban province of Ciego de Avila, were granted the environmental award of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (MSTE) for the care of nature and integration into the environment.

"The award is endorsed by the compliance with environmental norms aimed at ecological preservation in terms of tourism development, and the sustained work in the protection, preservation and maintenance of natural resources (flora and fauna)," said Celso Pazos Alberdi, delegate of MSTE in Ciego de Ávila province.

Hotel Meliá Cayo CocoThe Meliá Cayo Coco hotel is an example of the good use and respect of the area's native vegetation since, starting with the architectural design of the facility, work has been done to preserve the environment. In this sense, mention should be made of the natural state of the dune and the construction of huts on stilts to prevent soil compaction in the lagoon.

Regarding the Tryp Cayo Coco, one of the first hotels built in Jardines del Rey, specialists of the Coastal Ecosystems Research Center of Cayo Coco undertook the rehabilitation of the natural lagoon over which the lobby of the hotel was built, which process improved the overall environmental conditions of the area.

Currently, water flows better in the lagoon due also to the dredging of the channel that connects it with the sea allowing the natural recycling of the liquid.
