The reduction of the pollution load by 1.5 percent and the increase of the forest surface in 7 623.2 hectares in 2011, are the main results of the central province of Ciego de Ávila in salute to the World Environment Day.
The figures are endorsed by the dissimilar actions of the Avilanian scientific system for the treatment of waste generated and the reforestation programs of several sectors, such as Forestry and Agriculture, aiming at the conservation and sustainable use of forest lands.
Mention should also be made of the management plans for toxic, idle, chemical, hazardous and waste products in 54 state agencies, as well as the maintenance and repair of waste pipelines, stabilization ponds and sand traps that improved the efficiency of treatment systems.
María del Carmen Olivera Isern, director of the Environmental Unit in the provincial delegation of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment, the territory guaranteed the reduction of 2 847 kilograms (kg) and 800 liters (lt) of idle chemicals, 1 623 kg of expired products and 27 117 liters and 2 300 kg of hazardous waste, mainly in facilities belonging to the ministries of Agriculture, Transport, Basic Industry and AZCUBA Business Group.
"So far we have granted 58 environmental licenses to state agencies for handling toxic and idle chemicals and hazardous wastes, among them, used oils, of which we recovered 125 tons that were employed to preserve parts and equipment indoors and also as fuel in the Siguaney cement factory in the province of Sancti Spiritus", she added.
"Besides-she pointed out-the business units devoted to the generation of electricity starting from fuel oil and belonging to the Ministry of Basic Industry, delivered more than 489 tons (t) of mud, that will be used as fuel in the Ecuador Agro-industrial Complex, in the municipality of Baragua, during the next harvest.
Olivera said that according to Resolution 136/2009 "Regulations for the Comprehensive Management of Hazardous Waste", the rate of substances that deplete the ozone layer was reduced in 19 state agencies, of which some deserved to be praised at the national level: Iberostar Daiquiri and Santiago-Havana hotels, the Design and Engineering Company of Ciego de Ávila, and several business units: Technological Services, Natural Resources Cayo Guillermo, Supply and Transport, and Construction Services reporting to EMPRESTUR.
