libertadA statement of the Belarusian Free The Five Committee was addressed to the US Embassy in this capital on Sunday.

The message demands the release and return home of Gerardo Hernandez, Rene Gonzalez, Ramon Labanino, Antonio Guerrero and Fernando Gonzalez, known as The Cuban Five, who have been unfairly held in the United States for over 13 years.

The text deplores that while these anti-terrorist Cuban heroes serve unjust, harsh sentences in the United States for monitoring Florida-based terrorist groups operating against Cuba, Luis Posada Carriles, responsible for the deaths of dozens of innocent people, is granted US government protection and walks freely in that territory.

The document says that the unfair sentence given to The Cuban Five reveals the double standard applied by the US government in its alleged war on terror.

It stresses that international solidarity and union of action of decent men and women worldwide will be essential to overcome this colossal unfairness.

According to diplomatic sources, this call for the release of The Cuban Five will also be heard during the Press Fair scheduled for next week, and other messages will be addressed for this purpose to the US Embassy in Minsk and to President Barack Obama. (PL)
