• The exact location of the defensive position was lost for years
After a thorough research process, the exact spot was accurately found where the 27th fort was located. In November 26, 1898 the Spanish civil authorities surrendered the town of Ciego de Ávila to the forces of the Liberation Army commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Leopoldo Calvo.
The pictures show, on the right, the image of one of the reconstructed forts that were part of the Júcaro-Morón Military Trail. On the left, the researcher i front of the building where the defensive facility was located
The defensive position was in an area currently located on 50 C Estrada street, between the streets Marcial Gómez and Abraham Delgado, in the capital city of the Avilanian province.
The finding of the site is an important contribution to both local and national historiography, and its main protagonist Alfredo C. Cádiz Muñoz, a specialist of the Coronel José A. Gómez Cardoso Provincial History Archive, under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment.
In order to reach the current result, the researcher consulted various bibliographical sources mentioning the fact and giving some hints as to the possible coordinates, however, the original structure had been destroyed, which hampered the work of historians. He also used the Historical Index of the Province of Ciego de Ávila, published in 1989 by a team of local authors, as well as the volume Ciego de Ávila, from the chieftainship to the 19th century, by local historians Ángel Cabrera Sánchez, Mayda Pérez García and Álvaro Armengol.
Cadiz Muñoz added that during a work session with the archives of attorney Rafael Flores Delmonte (Volume 6, Book 507), he found the minutes, dated November 25, 1925, accounting for the main actions done for the placement of the first stone to start building a replica of the fort that would serve as the Veterans House of those who fought during the Independence War.
The document adds that the event, held on May 26 of that month, was attended by several personalities of the time. This was confirmed by the information published in the El Pueblo newspaper in its issue of November 26, 1925.
