Under the title of The inks of its spirit, will be opened an exhibition of private collectors for the first time in the provincial gallery of the Plastic Arts Council. The exhibits are related to Cuban engraving and are available to the public as of April 28, 9:00 p.m.
Titled after a verse by José Marti, the exhibition has 26 pieces by 14 artists of different styles and poetic, which were made in the last two decades of the twentieth century and early twenty-first. They "indicate the degree of complexity and high artistic value reached by engraving as one of the essential current visual art techniques", according to the specialist and curator of that institution, Sergio González Castro.
One of the engravings of Cuban artist Zaida del Río will make up the exhibition
Cuban engraving was very popular during colonial times. Whereas its industrial production sentenced it to be deemed almost a second-rate art, important figures, like painters Nelson Domínguez and Zaida del Río, succeeded, after a process of experimentation, in retrieving it for contemporary plastic arts.
Among the exhibits are concurrent techniques such as lithography, screen printing and metal etching, among others. "The excellent workmanship denotes formal and aesthetic mastery in most cases, allowing the unique opportunity to see first-class works and outstanding artists", according to González Castro.
The list of authors includes outstanding artists such as Carlos Quintana, Eduardo Roca (Choco), Ernesto Mata, Flora Fong, Gilberto Frómeta, Juan Francisco Elso Padilla, Juan Moreira, Kamil Bullaudy, Nelson Domínguez, Pablo Amancio Borges, Raimundo Orozco, Roger Aguilera Labrada, Rubén Torres Llorca and Zaida del Río.
The exhibition will remain open all through May.
