blockadeThe report Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba will be submitted to vote on Tuesday, October 25, at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Expectations are for this time, like in the previous 19 years, the majority of the UN member countries to vote in favor of the Cuban call for the lifting of the blockade maintained by Washington against the island for nearly 50 years.

As Cuban authorities have repeatedly reported, this siege has brought about economic damages to the island worth more than $975 billions.

The resolution notes that the blockade continues to be an absurd, illegal and morally unjustifiable policy which has not succeeded and never will succeed in undermining the Cuban people's patriotic decision to defend its sovereignty, independence and right to self-determination.

"It has only succeeded in subjecting the Cuban population to shortages and needless suffering, in restricting and hindering the development of the country and in seriously damaging the Cuban economy," it reads.

The document also refers to the increasingly overwhelming support shown by the international community in favor of the island's claim, including within the U.S. where civil, military personalities, legislators, NGOs and academic institutions are in favor of the lifting of the travel ban and the normalization of relations between the both countries.

The US blockade against Cuba not only massively, fragrantly and systematically violates the human rights of the whole Cuban people, but infringes the constitutional freedoms of the US people as they are not allowed to travel to the island.

It also violates the sovereignty of many other States that are also UN members and are recognized as autonomous countries as they have to face restrictions in doing business with Cuba. (acn)
